Solar Returns

A chart cast for the moment of your birthday each year, describing the year ahead

What a solar return is

Once a year, the Sun returns to the exact degree and minute of the zodiac it occupied at the moment you were born. That moment is called the solar return. A chart cast for that exact moment, from wherever you are in the world at the time, is your solar return chart. It describes the themes, focus areas, and overall tone of the year from one birthday to the next.

The solar return chart does not replace the natal chart. It is an overlay, a year-long lens applied on top of the natal. Think of it as a set of circumstances you move through during the year rather than a new description of who you are. The natal chart remains the foundation; the solar return describes the particular territory you are walking through right now.

Where you are on your birthday matters

Unlike the natal chart, the solar return changes depending on your location at the exact moment of the Sun's return. If you are at home, the chart is cast for home. If you are traveling abroad, the chart is cast for that location. This produces a different Ascendant, different house placements for the planets, and a meaningfully different chart. Some people deliberately travel on their birthdays to place key planets in specific houses of the solar return. This is called "solar return relocation" and it is a legitimate technique, though the natal chart always continues to operate underneath whatever the return describes.

How to read a solar return chart

The solar return Ascendant describes how the year begins and the general orientation you bring into it. The house the solar return Sun occupies shows the primary arena of focus for the year. If the solar return Sun is in the 10th house, the year tends to center on career and public life. In the 4th house, the year may emphasize home, family, and inner foundations. The solar return Moon shows the emotional tone; its house shows where the year's emotional energy is most concentrated.

Major solar return planets should also be read against the natal chart. A solar return Saturn in your natal 7th house is different from a solar return Saturn in your natal 1st house, even if both produce a generally Saturnian year. The natal houses always provide the context within which the solar return operates.

Key solar return placements

Solar return Ascendant

The general orientation and starting position of the year. Its sign describes how you are meeting the year and what energy you lead with.

Solar return Sun house

The primary focus area for the year. The house the Sun occupies shows where your most vital energy goes in the coming twelve months.

Solar return Moon

The emotional tone of the year and where the year's feelings are concentrated. A solar return Moon in the 12th house can describe a more interior, reflective year; in the 7th, a year centered on relationships.

Solar return Midheaven

The career and public direction of the year. Its sign and any nearby planets describe what is activated in your professional or public life.

Solar return Saturn

Where restriction, discipline, and serious effort live for the year. Its house shows where the year demands the most sustained work and responsibility.

Solar return stelliums

Three or more planets in one house concentrate enormous focus in that life area for the year. A solar return stellium in the 2nd house might produce a year heavily focused on money and resources.
