Secondary Progressions
How your natal chart slowly evolves, one day of sky for every year of life
The day-for-a-year method
Secondary progressions work on a simple principle: each day after your birth corresponds to one year of your life. If you are 35 years old, your progressed chart is calculated by advancing your natal chart by 35 days from your date of birth. The positions the planets occupy 35 days after your birth date become your current progressed positions.
This might seem arbitrary, but the technique has been used for centuries and consistently describes inner development in ways that astrologers find accurate. Progressions do not describe outer events the way transits often do. They describe the evolution of your inner world, your psychology, your focus, and your felt sense of identity across a lifetime.
The progressed Sun
The progressed Sun moves approximately one degree per year, which means it changes signs roughly every 30 years. When your progressed Sun changes signs, astrologers describe this as a significant shift in your dominant concerns, style of self-expression, and what energizes you. Someone born with a Capricorn Sun whose progressed Sun moves into Aquarius in their late twenties often reports a shift from personal ambition toward more collective or future-oriented concerns. It is not that the natal Capricorn Sun disappears. It is that a new layer has been added on top of it.
House changes matter too. Moving from the 3rd house to the 4th, for example, can correlate with a shift from external, communicative activity toward a more interior, home-centered focus.
The progressed Moon
The progressed Moon moves much faster than the progressed Sun, roughly one degree per month, completing a full cycle through the zodiac in about 27-28 years. This makes it the most active of the progressed planets and the one most closely tied to felt emotional experience. Each progressed Moon sign lasts roughly 2.5 years, bringing a different emotional tone and set of concerns to each period.
The progressed Moon's house placement at any given moment describes where your emotional energy is currently concentrated. When it moves through the 7th house, relationships tend to feel more central. Through the 10th, career and public life draw more of your emotional attention. The progressed Moon conjuncting a natal planet is often felt as a period of emotional activation around that planet's themes.
Progressed aspects
When a progressed planet forms an exact aspect to a natal planet, the themes of both are activated. These aspects build slowly over months and years, peak at exactness, and then slowly separate. Progressed Venus conjunct natal Jupiter might describe a period of romantic or financial flourishing. Progressed Mars squaring natal Saturn might describe a period of sustained effort against resistance. The slow build and release of progressed aspects gives them a quality of underlying mood rather than discrete event.
