Composite Charts

The chart of the relationship itself, not of either person in it

What a composite chart is

A composite chart is created by finding the mathematical midpoint between each pair of planets in two people's natal charts. If your Sun is at 10 degrees Aries and your partner's Sun is at 20 degrees Aries, the composite Sun would be at 15 degrees Aries. This process is repeated for every planet, the angles, and the major points, producing a single new chart that belongs to neither person but represents what the relationship itself is and does.

Where synastry describes the dynamic between two individuals, a composite chart describes the entity that forms between them. Every relationship has its own character, its own tendencies, its own challenges and gifts. The composite chart maps those qualities directly.

How composite differs from synastry

Synastry shows how Person A affects Person B and vice versa. The composite shows what the relationship produces when the two people are in it together. A couple might have difficult Saturn contacts in synastry, which describes pressure and responsibility each person places on the other, but their composite chart might have a strong Jupiter placement, which describes the relationship itself as expansive and optimistic when they are functioning as a unit.

Neither technique is complete without the other. Synastry tells you about the experience of relating; the composite tells you about the nature of the bond.

Reading the composite Sun

The composite Sun is the most important placement in the composite chart. Its sign describes the core identity and direction of the relationship. What does this relationship want to become? What is its fundamental nature? A Capricorn composite Sun might produce a relationship with a strong sense of shared ambition and long-term planning. A Gemini composite Sun might produce one centered on communication, learning, and variety of experience. The composite Sun's house shows which area of life the relationship most naturally centers itself in.

Difficult placements in the composite

Hard aspects in a composite chart, squares and oppositions between key planets, do not doom a relationship. They describe the recurring friction the two people will encounter when acting as a unit. A composite Mars square Saturn describes a relationship that regularly runs into the tension between wanting to move forward quickly and being slowed or blocked by circumstance or each other. Understanding this dynamic at least allows both people to work with it rather than be frustrated by it.

A composite chart with mostly harmonious placements is not automatically better than one with challenges. Ease can produce a relationship that lacks the productive tension needed to keep both people growing. The composite chart's job is to describe, not to judge.

Key composite placements to read

Composite Sun

The identity and direction of the relationship. What the relationship wants to be and how it presents to the world.

Composite Moon

The emotional life of the relationship. How the two people feel when together, what feels safe, and the shared emotional rhythms.

Composite Venus

How the relationship expresses affection, what it values, and its aesthetic character. Strong composite Venus often produces warmth and genuine pleasure in each other's company.

Composite Mars

How the relationship takes action and handles conflict. Where the shared drive points. Difficult composite Mars aspects can indicate recurring conflicts.

Composite Saturn

The relationship's lessons and long-term commitments. A strong composite Saturn can produce a very durable bond. It also describes where the relationship tends to feel heavy.

Composite Ascendant

How the relationship appears to outsiders. The impression the two people make together as a pair is different from either of them alone.
