The Seventh House

The house of partnership, marriage, and what you seek in the people closest to you

What the 7th house governs

The 7th house is the house of committed one-to-one relationships. Marriage, long-term romantic partnerships, and business partnerships all fall here. Traditionally it also governs open enemies, which sounds strange until you realize that a lawsuit or a public rivalry has the same structure as a partnership: two people locked into a committed, face-to-face dynamic.

The 7th house is always directly opposite the 1st house (your Ascendant). The sign on the 7th house cusp is always your Descendant, the sign opposite your rising sign. This opposition is meaningful: the 7th house often describes qualities you are still developing in yourself, the traits you most readily see and need in another person.

The three things to read in the 7th house

First, the sign on the 7th house cusp. This describes the quality and style of partnership you are drawn toward. Second, any planets inside the 7th house. Every planet here colors your relationship life directly. Venus in the 7th house brings a natural desire for partnership; Saturn in the 7th brings a serious, sometimes delayed, approach to commitment; Neptune in the 7th can bring idealism and occasional difficulty seeing partners clearly. Third, the ruler of the 7th house sign: where that planet sits in your chart, which house it is in, and how it is aspected all shape the overall story of your relationship life.

Planets in the 7th house

Not everyone has planets in the 7th house, and an empty 7th house does not mean an empty relationship life. It simply means the 7th house ruler does the narrating on its own. For those who do have planets here: each planet brings its specific themes into the domain of partnership. Mars in the 7th house may attract assertive or combative partners; Jupiter in the 7th can bring expansive, generous relationships or a tendency to marry for status; Pluto in the 7th often attracts deeply intense, sometimes power-laden partnerships where the stakes feel high.
