Have you ever done everything right and still felt like something was off? Like you were operating from a script that was technically correct but didn't quite belong to you? Or kept bumping into the same situation from different angles, as if life was trying to point you somewhere you kept avoiding?

That's the North Node.

What the lunar nodes are

The lunar nodes aren't planets. They're mathematical points where the moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. There's always a North Node and a South Node, always in opposite signs, always moving slowly backward through the zodiac.

They describe direction. Where you came from and where you're going.

South Node: what's familiar

The South Node represents what feels natural, what you've already developed, and where you default under pressure. It's comfortable. That's also why it becomes a trap.

The South Node describes abilities you've mastered to the point of automaticity. And because they're automatic, they don't produce growth anymore. They just produce more of the same.

A Scorpio South Node might retreat into control and intensity when the vulnerability required by growth feels like too much. A Gemini South Node might scatter across too many directions rather than committing, because committing means risking depth.

North Node: where you're going

The North Node describes what you're being pulled toward in this lifetime. It tends to feel unfamiliar, sometimes uncomfortable, and often more meaningful than the South Node path when you actually engage with it.

This doesn't mean abandoning what the South Node represents. Those skills are real. The work is bringing them into service of the North Node direction, rather than using them to hide from it.

Some examples

Aries North Node / Libra South Node: developing independence and self-assertion. The default pattern is over-accommodation and prioritizing harmony at the expense of personal needs.

Taurus North Node / Scorpio South Node: building material stability and simplicity. The default pattern is intensity, crisis, and seeking transformation at the expense of peace.

Leo North Node / Aquarius South Node: stepping into individual creative expression and personal leadership. The default is group thinking and prioritizing collective identity over individual visibility.

The house matters as much as the sign

The house your North Node occupies tells you which area of life the growth edge lives in. A North Node in Aries in the 7th house is about developing directness within the context of close relationships. In the 1st house, it's a more internal process of claiming identity.

The North Node is not a destination you reach. It's a direction you keep choosing. The growth is in the choosing, again and again.
