You arrive in a city and something shifts. You cannot explain it. The air feels different. You are somehow more yourself. Or the opposite: you land somewhere and everything is harder than it should be, and you have never been able to name exactly why.

Astrocartography is the branch of astrology that maps your birth chart onto the globe. It shows you which energies activate in which locations, and why certain places tend to change your life while others feel completely flat.

How it works

At the moment you were born, each planet in the solar system was rising, setting, at its highest point in the sky, or at its lowest point depending on where on Earth you were born. If you had been born somewhere else at the same moment, the planets would have been in different positions relative to the horizon.

Astrocartography takes your birth chart and draws the lines where each planet would have been on the angles, the most powerful points in a chart, for each location on Earth. Where a planet line runs through a city or region, that planet's energy is activated when you are there.

What each line does

Lines are drawn for four positions of each planet: the Ascendant line (planet rising), the Descendant line (planet setting), the Midheaven line (planet at its highest), and the IC line (planet at its lowest).

Sun lines bring vitality and identity. A Sun Ascendant line running through a city means your sense of self is amplified there. You may feel more confident, more visible, more like the version of yourself you have always wanted to be. Many people find their Sun line cities to be places where they feel truly alive.

Moon lines bring emotional depth and a sense of belonging. If you are looking for a place that feels like home, Moon lines are worth exploring. The flip side is that Moon lines can also bring up emotions more intensely.

Venus lines bring beauty, love, and pleasure. Cities on your Venus line tend to feel aesthetically pleasing and socially abundant. Relationships and creative work often flourish here.

Jupiter lines bring opportunity and expansion. Many people find that luck and abundance feel more accessible in their Jupiter line cities. Things tend to come more easily. But Jupiter can also encourage excess, so it is not always as effortless as it sounds.

Saturn lines are serious. They are associated with hard work, karmic lessons, and slow but significant building. Some people find their Saturn line cities to be places where they accomplish more than anywhere else, because the structure is there. Others find Saturn line cities oppressive and exhausting.

Mars lines bring energy and sometimes conflict. You may feel more driven and productive in a Mars line city. You may also feel more irritable, competitive, or accident-prone.

Neptune lines bring inspiration and sometimes confusion. Artists and spiritual seekers often feel drawn to their Neptune lines. But Neptune can also blur reality, making practical life harder.

Pluto lines bring transformation. Things that happen in Pluto line cities tend to be life-changing. Sometimes intensely difficult. Sometimes profoundly renewing.

Uranus lines bring disruption and electricity. Your Uranus line cities may feel exciting and awakening, or they may feel chaotic and unstable.

Chiron lines bring healing and wound activation. Places on your Chiron line may bring old pain to the surface, but also hold the potential for significant healing.

The paran grid

Beyond the primary lines, there are also parans: points where two planetary lines cross each other. These crossing points blend the energy of both planets in a very concentrated way. A Jupiter-Venus paran could indicate a place where both abundance and love flourish. A Mars-Pluto paran could indicate a place of powerful transformation with significant intensity.

How to use your astrocartography map

Start by looking at the cities you have already lived in or visited that left a significant impression on you. Then find those locations on your map. You will often find a relevant line running through or near them.

For choosing where to move or travel, look for lines that match what you are looking for. If you want to build your career, look at your Sun or Jupiter Midheaven lines. If you want love, look at Venus lines. If you want a creative awakening, look at Neptune or Uranus lines.

But remember that no line is purely positive or purely challenging. Every planetary energy has its gifts and its shadow side. The goal is not to find the perfect city. It is to understand what energies will be amplified where you are, and to use that knowledge intentionally.

What the city you live in now might be telling you

If you feel like certain themes keep showing up in your current location, themes that did not feel as present in other places you have lived, check whether a relevant planet line runs through where you are.

Life is not entirely determined by geography. But geography is not neutral either. The place you are in is always doing something. Astrocartography helps you understand what.
