The Lunar Nodes

Two points in your chart that describe what you are moving away from and what you are moving toward

What the nodes actually are

The lunar nodes are not planets. They are the two points where the Moon's orbital path intersects the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun around Earth. The North Node is where the Moon crosses from south to north; the South Node is where it crosses from north to south. The two nodes always sit exactly opposite each other in the chart, forming a single axis.

The nodes move slowly backward through the zodiac, completing a full cycle in about 18.6 years. Every sign pair gets a nodal axis roughly every nine years. The sign your North Node occupies in your natal chart depends on when you were born within that cycle.

What they mean in astrology

The nodes represent a developmental axis. The South Node describes what comes easily, what you have already developed, and where you tend to fall back when life is difficult. It is not inherently bad. It is simply territory that is already familiar. The North Node describes the direction of growth, what you are being called toward in this lifetime. It tends to feel uncomfortable at first because it is genuinely unfamiliar.

Think of it this way: the South Node is a well-worn path you could walk in the dark. The North Node is the territory just beyond where the path ends. You can see it but you have not walked it yet. Transiting planets aspecting the nodes often coincide with significant turning points and encounters with people who either reinforce old patterns or pull you toward new ones.

The nodal return and the reversal

At approximately age 18-19 and 37-38, the nodes return to their natal positions. These are often pivotal years, periods when old patterns are revisited and the developmental theme of the axis comes into sharp relief. The half-return at around age 9 and 28 brings an opposition that can feel like a clash between who you have been and where you are going.

South Node

What you carry in

Familiar patterns, instinctive defaults, well-practiced skills and responses. Can become a retreat under pressure. The comfort zone that eventually stops growing.

North Node

What you are growing toward

The direction of development, often uncomfortable at first, that carries the most sense of purpose and fulfillment when genuinely pursued. The place where growth lives.
