The Aspects
Angular relationships between planets, where the chart comes alive
What an aspect is
An aspect is formed when two planets are a specific number of degrees apart in the zodiac. Each angular relationship has a distinct quality, some create flow and ease, others create tension and drive. Aspects are where planets stop being isolated placements and start interacting. A chart without aspects would be ten separate, unconnected stories. Aspects weave them into one.
Conjunction
A conjunction occurs when two planets occupy the same degree of the zodiac, or close to it. Their energies blend and amplify each other, sometimes harmoniously, sometimes with friction, depending entirely on which planets are involved. A Sun-Jupiter conjunction amplifies confidence and optimism. A Sun-Saturn conjunction can weigh the ego with responsibility and self-doubt. The conjunction is the most powerful aspect in the chart because neither planet can operate independently of the other. It is always worth examining closely.
- The most potent aspect, two energies fused into one
- Effect depends entirely on which planets are conjunct
- Can be easy or difficult, it is not inherently harmonious
- The planets cannot operate separately; each colors the other
- Often describes a core theme or preoccupation in a person's life
Sextile
A sextile forms when two planets are approximately 60 degrees apart. It is a harmonious aspect, but one that requires some effort to activate, unlike the trine, the sextile does not flow automatically. It creates a channel between the two planets that opens into opportunity when engaged. Sextiles tend to connect planets in compatible but different elements (fire/air or earth/water), producing a productive friction that generates ideas, skill, or creative output when the person actually does something with it.
- Harmonious but not passive, requires conscious engagement
- Produces opportunity, skill, and productive connection
- Connects different-but-compatible energies
- Often shows areas of natural talent that still need development
- Less dramatic than trines, tends to operate quietly and consistently
Square
A square forms when two planets are 90 degrees apart. It is one of the most dynamic and challenging aspects in the chart, the two planets are in conflict, each pulling against the other in ways that create friction, frustration, and the compulsion to resolve the tension through action. Squares often describe the areas of life where someone struggles most, but also where they develop the most strength. A chart without squares is often a chart without drive. The discomfort of the square is also its engine.
- A source of tension, frustration, and inner conflict
- The two planets work at cross-purposes
- Generates drive and motivation precisely because it is uncomfortable
- Often describes recurring life challenges and the areas of greatest growth
- Unresolved squares tend to project outward as conflict with others
Trine
A trine forms when two planets are 120 degrees apart, they share the same element (both in fire signs, both in earth, and so on). The trine is the most naturally harmonious aspect in the chart. The two planets support and reinforce each other effortlessly. But this very ease can be its weakness: because trines don't demand anything, they are often underused. The gifts of a trine can go undeveloped precisely because they come without struggle. The best-used trines are those the person actively cultivates rather than simply relies on.
- The most naturally harmonious aspect, energy flows without resistance
- Planets in the same element, reinforcing each other
- Often describes innate gifts and areas of ease
- Can be taken for granted because it asks nothing
- Talent that is most powerful when consciously developed
Opposition
An opposition forms when two planets are directly across the zodiac from each other, 180 degrees apart. Unlike the square's internal friction, the opposition tends to play out in relationship: the tension is often projected onto another person, with one end of the opposition becoming "me" and the other "you." Oppositions ask for integration, for the person to hold both poles rather than identifying with one and encountering the other in their relationships and circumstances. At their most developed, oppositions can produce remarkable balance and the ability to see all sides.
- A polarity, two opposing energies pulling in different directions
- Often experienced through relationships and encounters with others
- The challenge is to integrate both ends rather than choosing one
- Can produce projection: living one end and attracting the other
- At its most developed, generates genuine balance and objectivity
