What retrograde actually means

No planet moves backward. Retrograde is an optical effect: from Earth's perspective, the planet appears to slow, stop, and reverse direction due to the relative speeds and positions of Earth and the other planet in their respective orbits. Astrologically, the period corresponds to a shift from the planet's forward, external expression to an inward, reviewing mode. Personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars) are felt more acutely day-to-day. Outer planets retrograde for months every year and describe longer cycles of collective reassessment rather than personal disruption.

Mercury

3 retrogrades

Retrograde 1

February 26 – March 20, 2026

Pisces (22° → 8°)

Mercury's first retrograde of 2026 falls entirely within Pisces. Communication becomes clouded, intuitive, and harder to pin down. Pisces Mercury retrograde blurs the line between what was said and what was felt, what was meant and what was understood. Dreams and intuition are heightened, but literal clarity is reduced. Contracts and practical negotiations should be revisited with care. Emails get misread emotionally. This is a period for listening inwardly and holding practical decisions lightly. Notably, all three 2026 Mercury retrogrades are in water signs, an unusual pattern that tilts the year toward emotional intelligence over rational certainty.

Retrograde 2

June 29 – July 23, 2026

Cancer (26° → 16°)

Mercury's second retrograde falls entirely in Cancer. Communication takes on emotional charge: what you mean and what others hear diverge more than usual. Conversations with family members or people in your domestic sphere may require revisiting. Things said in hurt or haste need a second pass. Information tied to home, real estate, or family matters is subject to revision. As the second consecutive water sign retrograde, this one invites emotional reconsideration of decisions made earlier in the year. What felt settled in the spring may need another look.

Retrograde 3

October 24 – November 13, 2026

Scorpio (20° → 5°)

Mercury's third retrograde of 2026 falls entirely in Scorpio, completing the year's unusual run of water sign stations. Scorpio Mercury retrograde tends to dredge things up: conversations that were left unfinished, power dynamics that were glossed over, truths that were not quite told. Depth conversations need a second pass. Negotiations around shared resources or intimate arrangements may resurface for revision. What is unsaid carries as much weight as what is said during this period. Something left unresolved earlier in the year is likely to surface here.

Venus

1 retrograde

October 3 – November 14, 2026

Scorpio, then retrograde into Libra (8° Scorpio → 22° Libra)

Venus retrograde happens every 18 months and lasts about six weeks, making it one of the most significant planetary events of the year. This retrograde begins at 8° Scorpio before retreating into Libra, where it stations direct at 22°. Scorpio governs intimacy, depth, shared resources, and what lies beneath the surface of relationships. Libra governs partnership, fairness, and how relationships appear. The retrograde asks you to look honestly at both. What has been going unsaid in a close relationship? What are the actual terms being operated under, versus the ones that were agreed to? Past relationships may resurface. New ones begun during this period may look different once Venus is direct in mid-November.

Saturn

1 retrograde

July 26 – December 10, 2026

Aries (14° → 7°)

Saturn retrogrades for about four to five months each year. In 2026, Saturn entered Aries in February and stations retrograde at 14° Aries in late July, remaining within Aries throughout the entire retrograde period. The retrograde invites a review of structures, discipline, and long-term commitments tied to Aries themes: initiative, courage, independent ventures, and the honest terms of self-assertion. Where something was launched too impulsively without sufficient foundation, Saturn retrograde makes the weakness visible. The work from February through July is tested. What holds up is worth continuing. What does not is better rebuilt now than later.

Jupiter

1 retrograde

December 12, 2026 – April 12, 2027

Leo

Jupiter retrogrades for about four months each year. In Leo, the sign of creative identity, personal authority, and the desire to be genuinely seen, Jupiter's retrograde turns the expansion inward. Growth that felt visible and confident becomes more private and self-questioning. This is a period for reconsidering what you are truly building and why, rather than how it appears. For those who have been performing confidence rather than embodying it, Jupiter retrograde in Leo asks for honest reckoning with what you actually believe about your own worth and creative direction. What needs deeper roots before it is ready to be seen?

Uranus

1 retrograde

September 10, 2026 – February 8, 2027

Gemini (5° → 1°)

Uranus entered Gemini in 2025, beginning a multi-year disruption of communication, information systems, technology, and the way ideas travel. During its retrograde, the disruption turns inward: revising your relationship to how you communicate, process information, and adapt to rapid change. The retrograde does not stop Uranian volatility but redirects it toward internal reassessment. What assumptions about how you think and communicate have gone unexamined? The forward station in February 2027 brings renewed external momentum to whatever has been restructured internally.

Neptune

1 retrograde

July 7 – December 12, 2026

Aries (4° → 1°)

Neptune retrogrades for about five months each year. Neptune entered Aries in January 2026, beginning a long transit that blends spiritual vision with individual initiative, at risk of naive or impulsive idealism. During its retrograde, this energy turns inward. Dreams and intuitions become more personal and introspective. Disillusionment that surfaces now is often clarifying rather than simply painful: it strips away what was projected rather than genuinely seen. For those in the early stages of new visions or creative directions, the retrograde is a period of honest internal assessment before the vision is carried outward again in December.

Pluto

1 retrograde

May 6 – October 15, 2026

Aquarius

Pluto retrogrades for about six months each year. In Aquarius, Pluto is transforming collective structures: technology, democratic systems, and the terms of human belonging. During its retrograde, this transformation turns inward and intensifies. Power dynamics within groups and systems are scrutinised. What looked like progress may reveal its shadow side. The retrograde is a period for inner excavation of how power, control, and collective belonging play out in your own life, and which of those dynamics you are ready to change.

How retrogrades land on your chart
